At Contraband we've gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure we're doing the right thing by coffee enthusiasts and our wonderful planet. Explore our sustainbility journey below.

Our brand new 100% electric roaster, custom made by coffee roaster manufacturing royalty, Probat, marks the next phase in our sustainability journey. While electric roasters have been around for a while, the technology to use them on a commercial scale is very new.
Being the first in Australia to move our entire roasting production to 100% electric has been an exciting experience. Without the need for combustion, our electric roasting system can be decarbonized, emitting nothing other than heat and water vapour.

Our wholesale delivery network is powered by our electric LDV delivery van. Our van is charged using power generated by solar panels, allowing us to distribute our coffee to our wholesale partners without carbon emissions.
All of our retail packaging is 100% curbside recyclable. Our coffee is packed by hand and sealed in paper bags which are not only recyclable but allow freshly roasted coffee to breathe without the need for a plastic valve which would end up in landfill.
To add an extra layer of protection from light and oxidization, the bags are placed inside a FSC certified kraft paper box. Both liner and box can be easily recycled in curbside recycling streams.

Coffee sent out to our wholesale partners is packed in bulk 4kg tubs. Fresh coffee is delivered weekly in these tubs and while dropping off the order we collect the empty tubs from the previous week's delivery.
Tubs are then cleaned, sanitized and dried ready for recirculation. By doing this we have eliminated the use of traditional single use plastic bags which would otherwise end up in landfill.
We would not be able to enjoy the amazing coffee we can without the hard work and expertise of producers at origin. Every coffee we buy is fully traceable right back to the farm and/or processing co-operative that produced it. This not only means that we are able to maintain relationships with specific farms and ensure that farmers and their workers are being paid fairly, but also provides us the opportunity where possible to support environmental or social programs in these communities.
Whether it be education programs for children, healthcare initiatives, food staple support, environmental protection and many other programs, we love finding coffees that not only taste great, but also do good.
