Emmanuel Rwakagara’s farm is on the tiny island of Gishamwana, sitting the middle of Lake Kivu in Rwanda’s Western Provence. With Emmanuel’s focus on sustainable farming practices, the farm is not only boasts organic certification but also prioritises biodiversity. The 35,000 coffee trees on the island are interplanted with various crops and forest trees as well as hosting cows and goats.
Emmanuel is also a founder of COOPAC, a Fair Trade Certified Cooperative which supports more than 8000 small farmers with facilities, training and redistributes spent coffee cherry to be used on member farms as organic fertilizer. The Co-op also provides funding to local communities for construction of schools, healthcare clinics and roads and bridges.
