Lalesa, Gedeb Drying Station was established in 2023 with the aim of supporting and promoting women farmers in Ethiopia. By working directly with farmers the initiative allows women to earn significantly better prices than they would have previously recieved. They have also established a childcare centre on site, which not only gives children an educational head start, but also allows mothers to focus on providing more income for the family, especially during harvest season.
Member farms selectively hand-pick cherry which is then delivered to the drying station where it is floated to remove under-ripe or damaged fruit. Coffee is then dried on traditional raised beds for up to 15 days.
